DEX has sent yet another letter to the Secretary of State, currently Damien Hinds MP – following up on his reply via his Policy staff: the Education Department has allocated £365m to help build new places at mainstream resourced schools (or units) and special schools. We want to know how much of this is for deaf resources: 20 deaf resourced mainstream schools have been closed in the last two years.
Also the department wants 90% of children to learn Modern Foreign Languages. We want to know why 90% of children with all levels of hearing loss can’t learn BSL too, in resourced mainstream schools or deaf schools with their deaf peers. Legislation requires review of provision for children and young people with SEN and disabilities (including deaf children).
